The problems of Hong Kong education system

Education is the way to nourish our youths from generation to generation. In Hong Kong, it also pays much attention to the development of the education system. However, there are much controversial discussions on the topic of nowadays Hong Kong education. The two main problems will be briefly discussed here.

The first problem is Hong Kong education system is exam-oriented. Students need to have so many exams or tests for proving their performances. It is no doubted that through having exams is a way to test how much they have learnt through the lessons, but it should not be the only way. All the policies carried out just focus on the exams' results, for instance, even though in primary school, students are allocated to secondary schools through their performance on the 3 examinations taken in P.5 and P.6. There are keen competition between them as they fight for getting into a top or higher band school. This easily caused a huge pressure on those students. After they get into the secondary school, they quickly need to start preparing another public exam for being admitted into University. The serious stress is not healthy to students obviously. Emotional problems will be seen finally which is not a good phenomenon in Hong Kong.

The ignorance of moral quality and conduct is another problem in today Hong Kong education system. Since all of the people are mainly focused on academic results, but neglect the importance of having extra-curricular activities and building their personal characters. This specially affect among the secondary school students as they work day and night in exchange for a place in the University. They are busy with attending different tutorial classes after school but no more extra time for joining activities. It is a big obstacle for them to become a all-rounded student in different aspects. Moreover, the moral lessons are not being concerned much. No moral lessons are included in the planned timetable. Students cannot learn what is moral or how important to have a good conduct in a formal way. It will lead to a result that they think those things are not vital and can be ignored. They also cannot build a positive attitude and behaviour in daily life. The name of "Hong Kong Child" is raised for those children having a bad and self-fish attitude etc.

In order to improve the situation,  Hong Kong government changed the original secondary school educational policy into HKDSE which includes some continuous assessments for testing students' performance, and also start encouraging youths to develop other areas, such as sports. However, it is still not enough. I think the school should also take the responsibility to solve the problems. The concept of having good academic results is the only way to prove you are success should be implanted to the students' mind. Besides, providing some talks about the moral issues is another choice to teach the students to build a positive mind.

Review on classmates' presentation (2)

Group 5: The topic of this group is also very interesting as this really related to daily life of the Japanese people. They studied the living habit of the Japanese. It is good to know the real situation happened in nowadays Japan as there may be some rumors on their living habits. For me, one of the funny points in the survey is most of the Japanese do not drink 味增湯 everyday. I always think of 味增湯 already became a MUST in their meal as 味增湯 is so popular in Japan. I agree with the explanation that more and more western meals are introduced to Japan, people have more choicees to choose what they eat, so it is one reason why less people drink 味增湯.
By the way, I appriciate this group for doing the powerpoint. They used a lot of cartoon pictures for explainig the ideas of different kinds of living habit of Japanese. This really impressed me !! ^ v ^

Group 6: This group conducted a survey about the travelling hobbies of Japanese. It is suprised that not so many Japanese to go travelling every year. This may because they are so busy or due to the money concern!
Many Japanese reflected that they choose 北海道 as their first choice to visit. I strongly agree with this result, since I went to 北海道 2 years ago, I have seen so many visitors were actually come from Tokyo, Osaka etc. They regard 北海道 as a good location to have thier vacation with their family since the life style is so different form the town city, 北海道 can let them relax and enjoy a different living style ! This must be a good time !! =3=

Survey Project Reflection *v*

In this survey project, our group did on a topic on " Japanese Perception towards marriage".
It is my first time to conduct a online survey 8v8 and I am so happy to know more about the view of Japanese people.

Base on the result, it is pleased to know there are higher proportional of the interviwees who are willing to get married. It can be interpreted that actually most Japanese regard family life is important in their life and this is a healthy phenomenon in a society. Although nowadays Japan are seriously affected by the culture of Otaku and many people worried that it will affect the intention of Japanese people from getting married, I think it won't affect much for most of the Japanese people : )

Moreover, there are some interesting findings in this survey. One of the questions is asking : will they want to get married with foreigners? There is a funny answer is he/she would like to marry with foreigners as foreign countries are allowed same sex marriage which is prohibited in Japan. Some of them even think that they can get a foreign country's passport if they marry with foreigners.

Other main focus in this survey whether the Japanese will give birth or not. Our expectation is should be more peole prefer not to have a baby due to poor economic or serious stress of the Japanese people. However, the result shown that actually Japanese peolple prefer to have a baby. It may because they think having a baby can make a family more perfect!  In this survey, we didn't ask the reasons why they want to have baby or don't, this is another direction for future project. We can know deeper their perception on having offsprings.

In this survey, we conducted through the internet. Undoubtedly, it is convenient to hold the survey, but there are some limitations for online survey. First, we didnt know what is the answer of different individuals so that we cannot interpret in a accurate way. Second, we cannot not ask specific question to certain people, we can only set some general qeustions for all the interviewees.  Therefore, I prefer to have a direct face to face interview the people concerned as we can know more about their background and can ask some specific questions on a particular situation. This can make the survey moer concise.

Review on classmates' presentation

Group 1 :
This survey is aboout Japanese perception towards animation and comic.
Many Japanese love  animate and comics very much but one point is very interesting which is half of them answered that they do not but the animate related products. This result is suprised me becuase as there are lots of locations specially selling those products in Japan, so most animate fans must certainly buy their favorite comic related products. However, it is not the case.
Besides, many of them hold a negative opinion towards nowadays Japanese animation development as they think that it becomes too commercial. Actually, I agree their views as at the very beginning drawing is considered as a kind of arts, but today many merchants regard this as a channel for purchasing money.

Group 2 :
It is the first time I heard of Tokyo Metropolitan Ordinace. The idea of setting up a rule for restricting some sex or violence animate is good, becuase it surely influences teenagers' metal development easily. But I think the goverment should promote the advantages of it more to the citizens as many of the interviwees did not know what is exactly is, and some of them even think this rule is useless. Inorder to acheive a healthier atmostphere of the comics' market, it needs both the creators and businessmen's discipline. I am looking forward a new environment of the Japanese animation.

Group 3 :
It is interesting to analyse Japanese understanding about Hong Kong. It should be expected most Japanese are familiar with Hong Kong, but it is a bit different from what we think. Actually not many Japanese have visited to Hong Kong before, so they do not have a all rounded view about Hong Kong. However, it is funny to know that the first impression of Japanese towards Hong Kong is Jakie Chan but not various tasty food. I do not understand why they specially remember Jakie Chan ? Most of my Japanese friends also have this impression!!
In general, they have a good impression to Hong Kong and hope they can visit and discover Hong Kong in the coming future.
